Moving in Ottawa: what to know before you book

Ottawa moves are shaped by winter, by older walk-ups in the central neighbourhoods, and by a provincial border: Gatineau is across the river in Quebec, where leases traditionally turn over on July 1. Local moves between the two sides are common.

Winter and street parking

Ottawa winters bring snow clearing that can restrict on-street parking. When the City posts temporary no-parking signs, vehicles must move, even with a parking permit. Check the signs on both streets the day before a winter move and keep walkways clear and salted.

Ottawa or Gatineau?

If either address is in Gatineau, expect Quebec's July 1 Moving Day rush on that side of the river. Crossing on the Ottawa River bridges at rush hour adds time; a mid-morning start is usually smoother.

Older buildings downtown

Centretown, the Glebe and Sandy Hill have many walk-ups and converted houses with narrow stairs, while Kanata and Barrhaven are mostly houses with driveways. Tell Tingsapp the floor and stairs at each end; it is part of the fixed price.
